Himeji Castle is the finest and best-preserved feudal castle in Japan, a dazzling white hilltop fortress of soaring, layered gabled roofs that seem to float like a bird in flight, giving it the name White Heron Castle. Dating largely from the early seventeenth century and never destroyed by war or fire, its brilliant white walls, maze of gates and defensive design make it a supreme example of Japanese castle architecture and a UNESCO treasure.

What you actually see

  • The white keep - the dazzling, many-roofed main tower.
  • The defensive maze - the spiralling gates and walls designed to confuse attackers.
  • The interior - the wooden floors and defences within the keep.
  • The cherry blossom - the castle framed by blossom in spring.

When to go

Year-round; spring cherry-blossom season is the most beautiful and the most crowded. It is an easy stop on the bullet-train line between Osaka and Hiroshima, best in the morning before the crowds and heat.

Honest expectations

It is very popular, especially in blossom season, so go early to beat the crowds and the queues to climb the keep, which can be steep and slow inside. The keep's interior is bare wooden floors rather than furnished rooms. It is an easy bullet-train stop, seen in half a day.

Nearby

Kobe, Osaka and Kyoto are within reach; Hiroshima is further west on the bullet-train line.
