Dunguaire Castle

Dunguaire is a tower house of the sixteenth century, built on a rocky point where Kinvara's inlet opens into Galway Bay, with a bawn wall running around it and the tide coming right up to the stone. It takes its name from an early fort associated with a king of Connacht that stood on the same spur. Restored in the twentieth century, it became a gathering place for writers of the Irish literary revival who were staying in the area. Inside there are four floors reached by a spiral stair, sparsely furnished, ending on a roof walk over the bay. Most visitors photograph it from the road and drive on.

When to go

Opening is seasonal, roughly spring to early autumn, and the castle shuts for the winter, so a winter trip means viewing from outside only. High tide with evening light gives the reflection that appears on the postcards. Kinvara's summer festivals fill the village and its parking. Banquets are booked separately and in advance.

Honest expectations

The interior is small and thinly furnished, and the whole visit takes half an hour, which is why many settle for the view from the road. The stair is a tight spiral. Parking at the castle amounts to a handful of spaces on a busy coast road, and the site closes entirely for months of the year.
