Winnifred Beach

Winnifred is a wide sweep of sand backed by trees at Fairy Hill, with a reef offshore that keeps the water calm, and it is free, which on the Jamaican north coast has become unusual. That is not an accident: when plans came forward to develop and enclose the area, the vendors, fishers and residents who use the beach campaigned to keep it public, and the community still looks after it. The result is a beach with a genuinely local feel, cook shops selling fish and festival at the back, a mineral spring running out of the hillside, and none of the sun loungers and security of the resort strips.

When to go

December to April is drier and calmest. Sundays are the local day and the beach is at its liveliest and most crowded. Weekday mornings are quiet. The access road down from the main road is steep and rough.

Things to know

The steep access track defeats ordinary cars and most people park at the top and walk down. There are no lifeguards, no proper toilets and limited shade. Vendors are persistent, though rarely aggressive. Litter is an ongoing problem despite community clean-ups. The reef has declined.
