Assinie

East of Abidjan, the coast arranges itself perfectly: the Aby lagoon runs parallel to the ocean, leaving a long palm-planted sandbar - Assinie - with calm water on one side, Atlantic rollers on the other, and a boat-taxi culture ferrying weekenders between lodge piers. The capital's families and expats colonised it generations ago and the rhythm holds: surf schools on the ocean side, jet skis and pirogues on the lagoon, langouste and grilled sole under thatch, and sunset drums somewhere down the sand. French-colonial history buffs note Assinie as one of the coast's first landfalls; everyone else notes the water temperature and stays in it.

History

Assinie, formerly Issiny, was the first trading post on this coast, though nothing of that time remains. Five Capuchin missionaries from Saint-Malo settled here in 1637 but soon left because of the climate and sickness, French missionaries and traders came in 1687, and the French held Fort Saint-Louis here from 1701 to 1704 (Wikipedia, Assinie-Mafia).

Before you go

The ocean side carries genuine currents and shore-break - swim where locals and lifeguarded lodges indicate, and default to the lagoon with children. Weekend prices track Abidjan wallets; midweek everything relaxes. Day trips work but the place is built for the overnight - the sandbar after the day-trippers leave is the point.
