Mount Etna

Etna is Europe's most active volcano and Sicily's presiding deity - a smoking cone around 3,400 metres high whose exact altitude changes as summit craters build and collapse, looming over Catania with a plume that locals read like weather. UNESCO listed it for its scientific worth: few places on Earth show volcanism this continuously, from the black lava fields that swallow roads to the Silvestri craters' walkable cones and the eerie dead forests half-buried in ash. The standard ascent runs from Rifugio Sapienza on the south side - cable car to 2,500 metres, 4x4 buses toward 2,900, and guided walks beyond as activity allows - while the gentler north side from Piano Provenzana offers lava caves and pine woods. Vineyards on the volcano's flanks turn mineral soil into Etna's fashionable wines, and in winter the improbable happens: skiing with the Ionian Sea glittering below.

May, June, September and October balance clear air and open access; summer haze softens views and winter brings snow and ski lifts. Eruptive episodes can close the summit zone or the Catania airport at any season - flexibility is part of the ticket.

Honest expectations

The full summit experience is genuinely expensive once cable car, 4x4 and mandatory guide stack up, and access levels change with activity - check current rules rather than old blog posts. Weather turns fast: it can be 30 degrees on the coast and freezing wind at 2,900 metres. Wear real shoes; lava gravel destroys trainers.
