The Trulli of Alberobello

Alberobello concentrates Puglia's strangest vernacular into one hillside: around 1,500 trulli - whitewashed drystone huts roofed with grey limestone cones - packed so densely the town reads as a fairy-tale settlement that somehow acquired souvenir shops. The technique is ancient and practical, mortarless stone that local legend says could be dismantled when the tax inspector rode through, and the cones carry painted symbols - crosses, hearts, planetary signs - whose meanings blur between piety and superstition. The Rione Monti quarter stacks its cone-rows up the slope in full commercial swing, while Aia Piccola across the way stays residential and quieter, laundry strung between centuries-old building logic. The two-storey Trullo Sovrano shows the form at its most ambitious, and the surrounding Itria Valley scatters trulli through vineyards and olive groves all the way to Locorotondo and Martina Franca.

Spring and early autumn for soft light and bearable heat; summer afternoons bake the white stone and fill the lanes with tour groups. Early morning or evening gives the cones back their silence.

Honest expectations

Rione Monti is heavily commercialised - nearly every trullo sells something, and midday coach crowds are real. Cross to Aia Piccola for the honest version. The town is compact; pair it with Locorotondo or Ostuni to fill the day.
