Slieve League

The sea cliffs at Slieve League fall about six hundred metres from the mountain's shoulder into the Atlantic, which makes them roughly three times the height of the Cliffs of Moher and far less visited. Most people stop at the Bunglass viewing platform, a fenced car park at the end of a single track road, where the cliff face shows bands of ochre, grey and green stained by mineral seepage. Beyond it a path climbs along the edge toward One Man's Pass, a narrow ridge with drops on both sides. Below, the sea works at the base of the rock and gannets pass in lines. The whole headland is open and unstaffed.

What you actually see

• The Bunglass platform - the standard viewpoint, reached by car or summer shuttle.
• The cliff colours - ochre and green mineral staining across the rock face.
• One Man's Pass - the narrow ridge route running on toward the summit.
• The Pilgrim's Path - the longer walk up from the village of Teelin.

When to go

May to September gives the best chance of clear air, though cloud sits on the cliffs in any month and can hide everything within minutes. Late afternoon light works on the face better than morning. In summer a shuttle runs from the lower car park; outside the season you drive to the upper gate and open it yourself.

Honest expectations

The view depends entirely on weather, and plenty of visitors arrive to a grey wall of mist and nothing else. The upper road is single track with passing places and gets awkward when a coach comes down. Wind at the edge is strong enough to unbalance you, the path is unfenced beyond the platform, and One Man's Pass should be left alone in gusts.
