Getting thereImmediately north of Duhok city
EntryFree; some areas restricted

The Duhok dam was built in the late 1980s across a gap in the ridge just north of the city, holding back a reservoir that runs into the valley behind, and its position makes it unusual: the water sits directly above the town, with the dam crest giving a view over the whole of Duhok on one side and the lake and mountains on the other. The shore has been laid out with parks, walkways and cafés, and it is where the city walks in the evening. The lake supplies irrigation and drinking water. Levels drop noticeably through the dry season. The mountains behind carry snow into spring, and the road north leads toward Amedi and the higher valleys.

What you actually see

  • The dam crest - the city on one side and the reservoir on the other.
  • Shore parks - walkways and cafés along the water.
  • The mountain backdrop - ridges holding snow into spring.
  • Evening crowds - the city out walking along the lakeside.

When to go

April to June for the fullest water and greenest hills, September to November for settled weather. Evenings are when the shore is busiest. Summer heat is significant though less than the plain.

Honest expectations

Access to parts of the dam structure is restricted and photography near it may be discouraged. The shore development is uneven. Water levels fall a long way by late summer. It is a city park rather than a wild lake.

Nearby

Duhok is immediately below; Zawita lies north.
