Kang

Kang is built into a steep slope in the Binalud mountains west of Mashhad, and like Masuleh in Gilan it solves the gradient by terracing: houses are stacked so that each roof serves as the courtyard and path of the row above, with narrow stairs between and no vehicle access inside the village. The building is stone and mud with flat roofs, and orchards of walnut, apricot and mulberry run up the valley below. It is at about 1,900 metres, which makes it a summer escape from Mashhad heat, and it fills with visitors from the city at weekends. A stream runs through, and stalls sell fruit, honey and dried herbs. The village is old and still lived in, though its population has fallen.

When to go

April to October; it is snowbound in winter. Half a day. Weekdays are far quieter; Fridays bring Mashhad families in numbers. Spring blossom and autumn fruit are the best times.

Things to know

Weekend crowds are heavy and the narrow ways jam. It is steep throughout with many steps. It is residential and photographing people needs permission. Facilities are limited to a few stalls and small eating places.
