Kalat-e Naderi

Kalat is a basin in the mountains north of Mashhad enclosed almost completely by a natural ring of rock walls, with only a few narrow gorges giving entry, and that geography made it a fortress before anyone built anything: it was regarded as effectively impregnable, and Nader Shah, whose base was in Khorasan, strengthened the gorges with walls and gates in the eighteenth century and made it his treasury after his Indian campaigns. Inside stands the Khorshid Palace, an octagonal stone pavilion with carved decoration that shows clear Indian influence, built as a mausoleum or treasury and never finished. The gorge entrances, the walls and the enclosed valley with its villages and orchards are the rest of the visit.

When to go

April to June and September to October. A day from Mashhad including the drive. It is close to the northern border and checks are possible. Summers are hot and winters cold.

Honest expectations

It is a long drive from Mashhad on mountain roads. The palace is unfinished and the interior is bare. Interpretation is minimal. The border proximity means identification checks and some restrictions. Facilities are limited.
