Getting thereKrui, West Lampung; long road from Bandar Lampung or Bengkulu
EntryFree; homestay and board charges

Tanjung Setia is on the Krui coast of West Lampung, a long stretch of beach facing directly into the Indian Ocean at the southern end of Sumatra, and it draws surfers for a left-hand wave that picks up the same swell as Mentawai and G-Land - long, powerful and breaking over reef, with a set of other breaks along the coast at Mandiri, Ujung Bocur and Way Jambu, the last with a heavy barrel that has a reputation. The development is limited to losmen and small surf camps run mostly by local families, with no resort scale, partly because the road down from Bandar Lampung takes eight hours or more. Outside the surf, the coast has fishing villages, pepper and coffee smallholdings inland, and the Bukit Barisan Selatan park behind.

What you actually see

  • A powerful left-hand break - picking up the same Indian Ocean swell as Mentawai.
  • A run of breaks along the coast - Mandiri, Ujung Bocur and Way Jambu.
  • Family-run losmen - small surf camps rather than resorts.
  • An eight-hour road - the drive that has kept the coast quiet.

When to go

May to September for the swell. A week.

Honest expectations

The road from Bandar Lampung is long and rough in stretches. Waves break over reef and are not for beginners. Facilities are basic and power can be intermittent. Malaria has been reported.

Nearby

Krui is the town; Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park is inland.
