Istano Basa Pagaruyung stands at the historic seat of the Minangkabau royal line in Tanah Datar, and it is a reconstruction twice over: the original was burned in a nineteenth-century conflict, the replacement built in 1976 burned down in 2007 after a lightning strike, and the present building was completed in 2013 to the same design. It is a rumah gadang on a monumental scale - the Minangkabau great house, raised on posts, with the roof rising into a series of sharp upswept points read as buffalo horns, carved and painted panels covering the walls, and a long open interior divided by function and by lineage, since Minangkabau society is matrilineal and the house belongs to the women of the clan. Visitors can wear traditional dress for photographs, which is most of what happens here.

What you actually see

  • Upswept horn roofs - the Minangkabau rumah gadang form at monumental scale.
  • Carved and painted panels - the decorated walls covering the whole exterior.
  • A twice-rebuilt palace - burned in the nineteenth century and again in 2007.
  • A matrilineal house plan - the interior divided by lineage as Minangkabau custom sets out.

When to go

All year. Half a day.

Honest expectations

This is a 2013 reconstruction - almost nothing is original, and the earlier building was itself a 1976 rebuild. It functions largely as a photo venue. Weekends are crowded.

Nearby

Batusangkar is close; Bukittinggi and the Harau valley are north.
