Green Canyon

Cukang Taneuh, marketed as Green Canyon after a similar name given by a French visitor, is a gorge on the Cijulang river a short drive from Pangandaran where the water has cut down through limestone into a slot with walls closing overhead, stalactites, hanging roots and a green colour from the mineral content and the light. Access is by ketinting, a small motorised boat, from the Ciseureuh jetty for about fifteen minutes upriver to the point where rapids stop the boats, and beyond that visitors swim or scramble with life jackets up towards the falls at the head - the body rafting operators run trips further up the river outside the boat section. Water level and clarity are everything: after rain the river is brown and fast and the swimming section closes.

• A boat then a swim - fifteen minutes upriver, then into the water to continue.
• Green mineral water - the colour the gorge is named for, when it is clear.
• Body rafting upstream - the operator trips on the sections above the boats.

June to September, when the water runs clear. Half a day.

Honest expectations

After rain the water is brown and the swimming section is closed - clarity is not guaranteed. Boats queue at weekends. Life jackets are compulsory. The gorge is short.
