Kaziranga National Park

Kaziranga spreads across the floodplain of the Brahmaputra in central Assam, a mix of tall elephant grass, marshes and patches of semi-evergreen forest that floods almost every monsoon and renews itself each year. It holds the largest population of greater one-horned rhinoceros anywhere, and unlike tigers the rhinos are usually easy to see, grazing in the open within a short drive of the gates. Wild elephant, swamp deer, water buffalo and a long bird list share the ground, and the reserve also carries a dense tiger population that is rarely seen because the grass is so high. Safaris run by jeep along fixed routes in four ranges, mornings and afternoons.

What you actually see

• One-horned rhinoceros - the reserve's signature animal, usually visible out in the open grassland.
• The grassland floodplain - tall elephant grass, marshes and oxbow lakes shaped by the Brahmaputra.
• Wild elephant and swamp deer - herds moving through the central and western ranges.
• Birdlife - pelicans, storks, eagles and wintering waterfowl across the wetlands.

When to go

The park opens roughly from November to April and closes through the monsoon, when the Brahmaputra floods the grassland. December to February is cool and comfortable, with mist on the early drives; March and April are hotter but the grass is shorter and sightings open up. Book safari slots and range permits ahead, especially over Indian holiday weekends.

Honest expectations

Rhino sightings are close to reliable, but tigers almost never show themselves here, so come for the grassland rather than the big cat. Safari routes are fixed and vehicles bunch together at popular spots. The closed monsoon season is long, dust in April is heavy, and the drive from Guwahati eats most of a day at each end.
