Chand Baori at Abhaneri

Chand Baori sits in the village of Abhaneri, off the road between Jaipur and Agra, behind a wall that gives no warning of what is inside. On three sides a near-perfect lattice of steps drops about thirteen storeys to a square of green water, roughly three and a half thousand of them, set in zigzag flights that throw a hard geometry of shadow across the pit whichever way the sun falls. The fourth side is a stack of pillared galleries and pavilions for the family who built it. The purpose was practical: a village water supply that stayed cool and reachable through the dry months. Carved stones salvaged from a ruined temple next door are displayed in the surrounding arcade.

What you actually see

• The stepped walls - three sides of interlocking flights descending in a diamond pattern.
• The pavilion side - tiered galleries and balconies facing the steps across the pit.
• The salvaged sculpture - carved fragments from the neighbouring temple set along the arcade.
• The shadow pattern - the geometry the steps make as the sun moves across the opening.

When to go

October to March keeps it bearable; from April the Rajasthan plains are severe and the pit holds heat. Late morning or mid-afternoon gives the raking light that makes the step pattern legible, while flat midday sun kills it. An hour is plenty, and most people fit it in as a stop on the drive between Jaipur and Agra.

Honest expectations

You cannot go down. The steps are barred and the whole visit is from the arcade at the top, which takes about fifteen minutes unless you are photographing. Water at the bottom is stagnant and green, and pigeons are everywhere. The village is dusty and offers nothing else, and the detour from the highway adds an hour of rough road each way.
