Pollurin

Pollurin is a set of three hot pots and a small pool dug into the hillside above Talknafjordur, fed by a hot spring and built up by local people, and they are free and open with a wooden changing hut beside them. Each pot is a different temperature, so the routine is to work out which one suits and stay in it looking down the fjord. It is a few minutes outside a village of a couple of hundred people, and it belongs to them - visitors are welcome on the same terms as anyone, which means showering first and not treating it as a facility somebody is paid to clean.

What you actually see

• Three pots at different temperatures - dug into the hillside.
• A view straight down the fjord - the reason to sit in the right one.
• A wooden changing hut - the only structure.
• Kept up by the village - free, unstaffed and unsupervised.

Year round, though the roads in are easier from June to September. An hour.

Honest expectations

There is no supervision or cleaning service - the state of the place reflects who used it last. Showering before entry is expected. The track up is short but rough. It can be busy in the evening in summer.
