Krossneslaug

Krossneslaug sits at the very end of the Strandir road, on a shingle beach north of Norourfjordur, and it is a plain rectangular concrete pool with a hot tub beside it, built by local people in 1954 and fed by a spring that comes out of the hillside behind. What makes it is the position: it is a few metres above the tideline with nothing between it and the open sea, so you swim looking at surf and, on a clear night in season, at the northern lights. It is unstaffed with an honesty box, and it is about as far as a road goes on this coast.

Honest expectations

The drive out is long, gravel and remote, with fuel and food only at Norourfjordur. Facilities are a changing hut. The honesty box is how it survives. Weather here is raw even in July.
