Rudas Baths

Rudas is the most architecturally intact of the Ottoman-era baths in Budapest. Its core is a small octagonal pool under a dome pierced with coloured glass discs, which throw shafts of light onto the water and the surrounding stone. Around it sit four corner pools at different temperatures, and the whole space is dim, echoing and steamy in a way that modern spa design does not reproduce. Later additions surround the old section: a swimming pool, a wellness area with saunas, and a circular tub on the roof with an open view of the Danube, Gellert Hill and the Pest embankment. The springs feeding it emerge along the fault at the base of the hill, the same source used across this stretch of Buda.

• The rooftop tub - a circular open-air pool with a view over the river and the Pest bank.
• The sauna world - steam rooms and saunas in the newer section behind the historic core.

When to go

The historic Turkish section runs single-sex on some weekdays and mixed on others, so check the current schedule before choosing a day; swimwear rules differ between them. Weekend night bathing runs late and is popular. The rooftop tub is best at dusk. Mornings are quietest overall. Slots for the rooftop are limited and often need booking.

Honest expectations

The rooftop tub is small, in demand, and frequently full or reservation-only, so the view you came for may not happen. The historic hall is dim, hot and cramped, and its atmosphere depends on it being quiet, which at busy times it is not. Single-sex and mixed day rules confuse visitors and are not always clearly signed in English. Changing facilities feel dated for the price.
