Tropicarium Budapest

The Tropicarium occupies part of a shopping centre in southern Buda and is the largest aquarium complex in Hungary. The route runs through themed rooms: freshwater tanks, a reptile and amphibian section, terrariums of insects and small mammals, and a tropical rainforest hall with free-flying birds, planting and a simulated rainstorm on a timer. The main tank is a shark basin with a curved acrylic tunnel that you walk through, with rays and reef fish alongside. It is squarely a family and school-group attraction rather than a research institution, and it works best as a wet or freezing weather option when the outdoor sights of Budapest are unappealing. Feeding sessions are scheduled through the day.

When to go

Any time of year, but its real value is on cold or rainy days. Weekday mornings in term time are the quietest; school groups arrive mid-morning and weekends are consistently busy. Feeding times are the most interesting moments, so check the day's schedule on arrival and plan your route backwards from them. Allow extra time for the journey out of the centre.

Honest expectations

It sits inside a shopping mall, and the approach is a car park rather than an attraction. By the standards of major European aquariums it is modest in scale, and the tunnel is short. Lighting is dim and glass reflections frustrate photographers. School groups make midweek mornings loud. Some enclosures in the reptile and small mammal sections are small and dated.
