Orseg National Park

Orseg, protected as a national park since 2002, sits in the far west where Hungary meets Slovenia and Austria. It is the wettest and one of the greenest parts of the country, and the landscape shows it: heavy forest of pine, beech and chestnut broken by small hay meadows, boggy hollows and clear streams. Settlement follows a pattern found almost nowhere else in Hungary, with farmsteads grouped in small clusters on hilltops, each cluster a short walk from the next across a valley. Traditional crafts survived here longer than elsewhere, notably black pottery, and so did old orchards with local fruit varieties. Because there is little industry or lighting, the night sky over the park is genuinely dark.

• Hilltop hamlets - the scattered farmstead clusters, with the preserved group at Szalafo showing the old layout.
• Hay meadows and orchards - flower-rich meadows and old fruit varieties kept in traditional management.
• Village pottery - the black pottery tradition still worked in the western villages of the park.
• Dark night skies - very low light pollution, with the Milky Way visible on clear moonless nights.

When to go

May and June bring meadow flowering and long days. September and October give chestnut harvest, mushrooms and colour. Rain is possible in any month, and this is the point of the landscape rather than an exception, so pack for it. Village guesthouses fill in August and over long weekends. Many small museums and craft workshops keep short or seasonal hours.

Honest expectations

It rains often, and low cloud can sit in the valleys for days. There is no single sight here: the reward is slow, and visitors expecting a headline attraction leave disappointed. Public transport is thin to the point of impractical, so it is a car trip. Restaurants and shops are few and close early. Distances between hamlets look small on the map but the roads wind.

The Slovenian border and the Raba valley run alongside, with Zalaegerszeg the nearest larger town to the east.
