Holloko

Holloko is a beautifully preserved living village of the Paloc people in the wooded hills of northern Hungary, a UNESCO site of whitewashed houses with wooden galleries and carved gables clustered around an old church, watched over by a medieval castle on the hill. It is a rare surviving picture of traditional rural Hungarian life before the modern age.

Background

The name means "Raven-stone" in Hungarian. Work on the castle started in the middle of the 13th century, and records first mention it in 1310. In 1683 the castle and the old village were left empty, and the present settlement grew up in their place. In 1782 it was still a village of one street, but it spread through the 18th and 19th centuries until, by 1885, no land remained to farm or build on. Because the houses are partly built of wood, fires forced repeated rebuilding, the last in 1909. The protected core covers 67 houses on Lajos Kossuth and Sándor Petőfi streets, and the village had 294 residents in 2024.
