Victoria Peak

Victoria Peak, known simply as the Peak, is the highest point on Hong Kong Island and the city's most famous vantage point, offering one of the most breathtaking urban panoramas on earth. Reached by the historic Peak Tram, a steep funicular climbing since 1888, the summit looks out over the dense, glittering forest of skyscrapers below, the busy Victoria Harbour, Kowloon beyond and the outlying islands, a view that is spectacular by day and utterly dazzling after dark when the whole city blazes with light.

History

As early as the 19th century the Peak drew prominent European residents for its views and its cooler climate, and the sixth governor, Sir Richard MacDonnell, built a summer residence here around 1868. Residents were carried up and down the steep slope in sedan chairs, which held back building until the Peak Tram opened in 1888 and created a demand for houses on the hill (Wikipedia, Victoria Peak).

When to go

October to December, the cool, clear, dry season, for the sharpest views; go on a clear day, and consider staying into dusk to see the city transform from daylight to its dazzling night-time blaze. Weekends and holidays bring long tram queues, so go early or midweek.

Before you go

The Peak Tram and viewing terraces draw huge crowds and long queues, and the summit is heavily commercialised with malls, while haze can dull the view on humid or polluted days, so pick a clear day. The panorama itself, especially at dusk and after dark, is genuinely one of the world's great city views and worth the effort.
