Man Mo Temple

Built in the 1840s when the colony was barely a decade old, Man Mo Temple honours the god of literature and the god of war - an old pairing that once drew students before examinations and merchants before deals. Inside, the light comes filtered and orange through hundreds of giant incense coils hanging from the ceiling, burning slowly for weeks and filling the hall with fragrant smoke; brass, red lacquer and carved shrines emerge from the haze. It is small, deeply atmospheric and completely surrounded by the modern city, which makes stepping through the door feel like a change of century as much as a change of room.

When to go

Open year round, and best early in the day when the incense is thick and visitors few. It is an indoors escape from summer heat and rain alike. Chinese New Year and examination season bring worshippers in numbers - respectful visiting is fine, photography of people at prayer is not.

Honest expectations

The temple is small - fifteen minutes covers it - so treat it as the anchor of a walk through Sheung Wan rather than a destination on its own. The incense smoke is heavy and genuinely irritating for asthma sufferers. It is an active place of worship first and a sight second: keep voices down, avoid pointing cameras at people making offerings, and step aside for those who came to pray.
