Hong Kong Observation Wheel

The observation wheel stands on the Central harbourfront beside the ferry piers, about sixty metres high with enclosed air-conditioned gondolas, and it has been turning there since 2014. A ride is several rotations lasting around fifteen to twenty minutes, giving views across the harbour to Tsim Sha Tsui, along the waterfront toward Wan Chai and up at the towers of Central directly behind. It is modest next to the wheels of other cities and the appeal is the setting rather than the height: the harbour traffic, the ferries coming and going below, and the skyline lit after dark. An open events space with food and drink stalls operates beside it.

History

In May 2013 the Lands Department leased 9,620 square metres of reclaimed land between Central Piers 9 and 10 for the wheel. It has had two owners: Swiss AEX, which expected a million riders a year when it opened in 2014, and since 2017 The Entertainment Corporation Limited, which reached a million riders in less than seven months after reopening it (Wikipedia, Hong Kong Observation Wheel).

When to go

October to April for clear air; after dark for the lights. One hour including queueing. Weekend evenings are busiest.

What to expect

It is small and the view is lower than the surrounding buildings, which limits it. Gondola glass reflects badly for photographs. It is expensive for the length of the ride. The Star Ferry gives a better harbour experience for a fraction of the price.
