M+ opened in 2021 on the West Kowloon waterfront in a building by Herzog and de Meuron shaped as an inverted T, a horizontal slab of galleries with a tower rising from it whose harbour-facing side is a screen of LEDs that shows commissioned work at night across the water. It collects visual culture rather than art alone, so design, architecture, moving image and graphics sit alongside painting and sculpture, and its holdings include the Sigg Collection, a large body of Chinese contemporary art assembled by a Swiss diplomat and given to the museum. Galleries run over several floors around a central atrium, with a found space built into the exposed concrete of the rail tunnel beneath.

What you actually see

  • The Sigg Collection - Chinese contemporary art on a scale held nowhere else.
  • Design and architecture galleries - visual culture beyond fine art.
  • The LED harbour facade - commissioned work shown across the water at night.
  • The tunnel found space - galleries built into exposed rail structure.

When to go

Year round. Half a day, easily a full one with the Palace Museum next door. Book online; weekend slots sell out. Closed Mondays.

Honest expectations

The building is enormous and covering it properly takes stamina. Special exhibitions carry separate tickets. Photography rules vary by gallery. West Kowloon is a long walk from the MTR with little shade.

Nearby

The Hong Kong Palace Museum is next door; Tsim Sha Tsui lies east.
