Kowloon Peak

Kowloon Peak, Fei Ngo Shan, rises to 602 metres on the ridge above east Kowloon, and it gives one of the most direct city views in Hong Kong: the airport approach corridor, the whole of Kowloon, the harbour and Hong Kong island stacked below in one frame. Most of the traffic on it is heading for a narrow rock ledge projecting from the cliff below the summit, which has become one of the most photographed spots in the territory and appears constantly on social media. It is genuinely dangerous. The rock is loose in places, the drop is sheer and there are no railings. The main summit and the road viewpoints give much of the same view safely.

When to go

October to April for clear air. Half a day. Sunset and night are the busiest times. Avoid the cliff route entirely in wet or windy weather.

What to expect

The cliff ledge is dangerous; the rock is loose, the drop is unprotected and crowds push for position. Haze often ruins the view. The climb from Choi Hung is long and steep. Nothing about the photograph is worth the risk.
