La Muralla sits on an isolated massif in Olancho, far enough from anywhere that the forest survived while the surrounding hills were cleared. It has a reputation among birders out of proportion to its size: resplendent quetzals breed here and are reliably found in season, along with a long list of highland species, and the visitor centre and trail network were built with that in mind. The forest is oak and cloud forest with heavy epiphyte cover, and the walking is easier than in most Honduran parks.

- The oak forest - moss and bromeliad-covered oak through the middle altitudes.

When to go
December to May covers the dry season, and the quetzal breeding season from about March to June is when sightings are most reliable. Mornings are essential for birds. The track in is difficult after rain.
Honest expectations
Olancho is a long way from the main tourist routes and getting there takes a full day from either coast. The visitor centre has been run intermittently and facilities cannot be assumed. The last stretch of road needs a four-wheel drive.
