Bassin Bleu

Hidden in the lush green mountains above Jacmel, Bassin Bleu is one of Haiti's most beautiful and enchanting natural sights, a series of stunning cobalt and turquoise swimming pools linked by cascading waterfalls, set deep in a rocky gorge draped with tropical greenery and vines. Reaching the pools involves a scenic journey up into the hills and a hands-on scramble, with local guides helping down the smooth rock faces, sometimes by rope, to the deepest and most beautiful pool, the Bassin Clair. There, the vivid blue water, waterfall and jungle setting create a magical, secluded spot for a refreshing swim, a hidden gem of Haiti's countryside.

When to go

November to March, the drier season, for the best access and conditions, as heavy rain can swell the pools and make the rocky scramble dangerous; a local guide is essential, both for safety on the slippery rock faces and to find the way.

The scramble down to Bassin Clair is on smooth rock, sometimes on a rope, and the rock is slippery when wet.
