Furcy

Furcy sits above Kenscoff among pine and eucalyptus, cold enough at night to want a fire and cool enough by day that people come up from the capital for the air. It is the standard starting point for the walk across the La Visite plateau to Seguin, and there are a few lodges along the road for those doing it in two days. The valley below the village drops away steeply and the view runs south towards the Massif de la Selle.

• The climate - cold nights and cool days, unlike anywhere on the plain.

When to go

November to March is the dry season and the best for walking. Cloud comes up the valley most afternoons in any month. Nights are genuinely cold and lodges are unheated beyond a fireplace.

Practical notes

Accommodation is a few small lodges that fill at weekends and need booking. The road up from Kenscoff is rough in the last stretch. There is very little in the village itself: this is a base rather than a destination.
