Charity

Charity is the end of the road on the Essequibo coast, the point where the tarmac stops at the Pomeroon river and everything further north and west continues by boat. That makes it a transfer town: a market on the riverbank where farmers from the Pomeroon bring produce down by boat, and passengers change from minibuses to speedboats. Monday is the main market day and the landing is at its busiest then.

• The landing - the transfer point between road and river transport.
• The Pomeroon - the river running inland through farming country.
• The road's end - the physical limit of the coastal road network.

When to go

September to April is drier and the most comfortable. Monday market is the day to come. The wet seasons raise the river and complicate boat schedules.

Honest expectations

There is very little for visitors beyond the market and the landing. Accommodation is minimal. Boat fares up the Pomeroon should be agreed in advance.
