Orango and the Saltwater Hippos

The Orango Islands National Park, in the southern Bijagós Archipelago, protects one of the most unusual wildlife populations in Africa: a rare group of hippopotamuses that have remarkably adapted to the saltwater environment, living among the islands and mangroves and swimming through the salty tidal channels and even the sea, a highly unusual behaviour for a normally freshwater animal. The park's islands, savanna, palm groves and rich waters also shelter Nile crocodiles, the gentle West African manatee, sea turtles and an abundance of birds. When to go

November to May, the dry season, for the best weather and conditions for boat trips and walks; the hippos and wildlife are present year-round, though sightings, as always, take patience and luck, and are best sought with local guides in the cooler hours. The park is reached by boat within the Bijagós, from a simple lodge.
