Getting thereAt the southern tip of Basse-Terre; road from Vieux-Fort
EntryFree; tower closed

The lighthouse at Vieux-Fort stands on the southernmost point of Basse-Terre, on a headland of low cliffs with the channel to Les Saintes opening beyond it and Dominica visible on a clear day. The village below has a lace-making tradition, and the point is a windy open place with a small fort site nearby. The current running through the channel here is strong and the sea is rarely calm.

What you actually see

  • The southern point - the tip of Basse-Terre with the channel beyond.
  • The lighthouse - the tower on the headland, seen from outside.
  • The Saintes view - the islands across the channel and Dominica beyond.
  • The lace tradition - the craft the village below is known for.

When to go

December to April is the driest and clearest. Wind on the point is constant. Mornings give the best chance of seeing Dominica.

Honest expectations

The lighthouse tower is not open to visitors. The point is exposed with strong wind and no shade. Currents in the channel below are dangerous.

Nearby

Trois-Rivieres is north, and Les Saintes are offshore.
