On the site of the Darboussier sugar factory - once the island's largest - Pointe-a-Pitre raised the Caribbean's most ambitious act of remembrance: Memorial ACTe, a silver lattice wrapped over black stone, conceived as a centre of expression and memory of the slave trade and slavery. The permanent exhibition runs from African civilisations through the Atlantic trade, plantation society, abolition and the long afterlives - resistance, culture, creolisation - in immersive galleries that neither soften nor sensationalise, and the building's waterfront promenade ties the story to the harbour that shipped the sugar. It is the essential context for every plantation ruin and cane field on the islands.

What you actually see

  • The permanent galleries - the trade, slavery and afterlives, told whole.
  • The architecture - silver lattice over black stone on the sugar wharf.
  • The memorial promenade - the harbour walk and its artworks.
  • The temporary exhibitions - Caribbean art and memory in rotation.

When to go

Year round on museum hours (closed days vary - check ahead); allow an unhurried half day, and air-conditioned galleries make it the wise midday plan. Audio guides carry the depth.

Honest expectations

The subject is heavy by necessity - pace yourself, and consider whether younger children are ready for all galleries. The museum's surroundings are workaday port city; standard urban awareness applies. It is the island's most important indoor visit - schedule it as such rather than as a rain fallback.

Nearby

Pointe-a-Pitre's markets and old centre, and the ferries to the southern islands.
