Getting thereBetween Dimitsana and Karytaina in Arcadia; trailheads at Dimitsana, Stemnitsa and Ancient Gortys
EntryFree; monasteries by donation, modest dress

The Lousios runs for about fifteen kilometres through a gorge up to three hundred metres deep, and its name comes from the myth that the newborn Zeus was bathed here. The classic walk links Dimitsana to Ancient Gortys via the monasteries: Prodromou, built into a cliff overhang so tightly that its cells occupy natural rock hollows and it appears from the opposite side as a white line on the precipice; Palaia Filosofou, half ruined and nearly invisible in the rock; and Nea Filosofou across the valley. At the southern end, the sanctuary of Asklepios at Ancient Gortys sits by the river with the remains of baths and a temple. Paths are stone-laid in places, cross the river on wooden footbridges, and take four to six hours end to end.

What you actually see

  • Prodromou Monastery - cells built into a cliff overhang above the river.
  • The gorge path - stone trails and footbridges between the monasteries.
  • Ancient Gortys - a riverside sanctuary of Asklepios with bath ruins.
  • The old mills - ruins of watermills along the stream.

When to go

April to June for water in the river and wildflowers; September to November for stable weather. Midsummer is hot in the exposed sections and the river runs low. Monasteries close for a midday break.

Honest expectations

The walking is real: steep ascents and descents, loose stone, and four to six hours for the full route, with a car shuttle needed unless you double back. The monasteries are working communities with dress codes and photography limits. Signage is decent but a map is advisable.

Nearby

Dimitsana and Stemnitsa sit above either side; Karytaina castle overlooks the valley downstream.
