Lesvos Petrified Forest

The western end of Lesvos looks nothing like the olive-covered east: it is open, treeless and volcanic, and scattered across it are the remains of a forest turned to stone. Ash falls buried standing trunks tens of millions of years ago, and mineral-rich water replaced the wood cell by cell, leaving rings, bark texture and root systems intact in silica. The main protected park sits near Sigri, where marked paths lead between upright trunks still rooted where they grew, some over several metres tall. A museum in Sigri itself explains the geology and displays the best specimens indoors. Other fossil sites are dotted along the road from Antissa, some fenced, some barely marked, and the whole area is managed as a geopark.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the sensible seasons; there is no shade anywhere on the site and midsummer afternoons are brutal. Morning light picks out the rings and bark texture better than flat midday sun. The drive from Mytilene takes around two hours each way, so treat it as a full day. Wind on this coast is constant and strong.

Honest expectations

The appeal is geological rather than scenic, and some visitors find fenced stumps in a bare landscape underwhelming after a long drive. Signage between the smaller roadside sites is poor. There is no shade and little water on the trails, and opening hours can be shorter than posted outside summer. The museum is good but small.
