Elafonissi Beach

At Crete's far south-western tip, Elafonissi arranges itself like a daydream: a shallow lagoon of impossibly bright turquoise, sandbars you wade across to a low protected island, and sand blushing genuinely pink in swathes where crushed shell fragments concentrate. The water is knee-deep for hundreds of metres - warm, calm and made for small children and lazy floaters alike - while the island's far side offers dunes, cedar scrub and small coves for those who walk five minutes beyond the sunbeds. The whole area is a protected nature reserve, and signs asking visitors not to pocket the pink sand mean exactly what they say.

Honest expectations

The pink is real but subtler than the saturated photos promise - streaks and patches, not a rose-coloured carpet, and strongest where taking it is forbidden. Peak-season crowds are serious; the magic survives at the edges and off-hours. The drive is winding mountain work both ways. Facilities are simple - this remains a protected reserve, not a beach club, and that is precisely its charm.
