Bourtzi Sea Fortress

The Venetians fortified the islet of Agioi Theodoroi in 1473 to close the harbour of Nafplio, and the little castle that resulted, Bourtzi, fills its rock almost exactly, a compact tower and bastion complex with a small landing. A chain could be drawn from the fortress to the shore to bar enemy ships, a system that gave the harbour its security for centuries. After independence the building served various purposes, including a period as a hotel in the twentieth century, and it has since been restored as a monument, with access by small boat from the quay and periodic closures for works. Seen from the waterfront, floodlit at night, it is the image of Nafplio, and the short crossing is one of the pleasures of a visit.

• The night view - the fortress floodlit from the promenade.

When to go

Spring and autumn; boats run frequently in season and less often in winter, and the crossing is cancelled in strong wind. Evening on the promenade is the best view without going out.

Honest expectations

The islet is tiny and the visit short, and the interior has been closed for restoration for long stretches, so check before paying for a boat. There are no facilities on the rock beyond a small cafe when open.

Nafplio's old town and Palamidi are on the shore; Tiryns and Mycenae lie inland.
