Kokrobite is a fishing village on the coast west of Accra that became the capital's nearest beach escape, and its reputation was built around music: the Academy of African Music and Arts, founded by the master drummer Mustapha Tettey Addy, has taught drumming and dance here since the 1990s, and the beach bars run live highlife, reggae and drumming sessions at weekends. The beach itself is a long stretch of sand with fishing canoes at one end and a line of guesthouses and bars behind. It fills on Saturdays and Sundays with people from Accra and empties during the week. Langma beach a short distance west is quieter for anyone who wants the coast without the sound system.

What you actually see

  • The beach strip - the guesthouses and bars behind the sand.
  • Drumming and dance - the classes and weekend live sessions.
  • Fishing canoes - the boats worked from the eastern end.
  • Weekend crowds - the Accra visitors who fill the beach on Sundays.

When to go

November to March in the dry season. Weekends are when the music happens and the beach is busiest; weekdays are quiet. Evenings are when the bars run live sets.

Honest expectations

The sea has strong rip currents and there are no lifeguards. The beach carries litter, particularly after weekends. Persistent vendors and hustling are common. Weekend noise runs late and rooms near the bars are loud.

Nearby

Accra lies east; Winneba is west along the coast.
