Saxon Switzerland and the Bastei

Saxon Switzerland piles its weathered sandstone into pinnacles, table mountains and gorges along the Elbe upstream of Dresden - painters' country since the Romantics walked it, national park since 1990. The Bastei is its exclamation: a row of rock towers 194 metres above the river, linked since 1851 by a seven-arched sandstone bridge that replaced a wooden original and has been the region's defining photograph ever since. A free viewing platform, rebuilt and reopened in 2023, juts over the valley for the wide shot; the ruined rock castle of Neurathen threads walkways through the pinnacles beside it; and the Malerweg - the Painters' Way - stitches the park's finest days of walking together, from the Schrammsteine ridges to quiet side valleys. Caspar David Friedrich found his fog-wreathed foregrounds here, and dawn on the Bastei still produces them on schedule.

When to go

April to October for full trails; autumn dawns deliver the fog-in-the-valley theatre the painters came for. Winter is quiet and the bridge iced - beautiful, but bring grip.

Honest expectations

The Bastei is mobbed by tour buses from late morning - dawn or evening is a different place entirely. The walk up from Rathen is short but genuinely steep, parking above fills early on fine weekends, and the famous shot of the bridge itself is from the Ferdinandstein spur, not the bridge.
