Feldberg

The Feldberg reaches 1,493 metres, the highest point in Germany outside the Alps, and its summit area is open grassland with dwarf shrubs; the tree line here would naturally be higher, and the open top is the result of centuries of summer grazing that is now maintained deliberately for its rare plants. The Feldsee, a small lake in a north-facing cirque below, is a glacial remnant. The mountain has the longest snow season in the region and carries the largest ski area in the Black Forest. Skiing in Germany began nearby: the first ski club was founded in Todtnau in 1891.

When to go

June to September for walking and the alpine flora; December to March for skiing. Cloud sits on the summit often, and the Alpine view needs clear cold air.

Good to know

The summit is developed with a tower, lifts and car parks. Cloud hides the view frequently. Sensitive plant areas restrict where you can walk.
