Bakuriani lies at around seventeen hundred metres on a plateau in the Trialeti range above Borjomi, in pine and spruce forest, and it has been a resort since the late nineteenth century, first as a summer retreat and then as a winter one. The ski areas, principally Didveli and Kokhta, offer gentler and more sheltered skiing than Gudauri, which suits families and beginners. The other way to arrive is the narrow-gauge railway from Borjomi, a slow line built in the early twentieth century that climbs through the forest in around two and a half hours, crossing a steel bridge often attributed to Eiffel's workshop. In summer the plateau is used for walking and cycling.
What you actually see
- The narrow-gauge railway from Borjomi - a slow climb through pine forest.
- Didveli and Kokhta ski areas - sheltered slopes suited to families.
- The steel bridge on the line - often attributed to Eiffel's workshop.
- Pine plateau in summer - walking and cycling on the same ground.
When to go
December to March for skiing and June to September for the summer season. Two days to a week. The railway runs on a limited timetable and is slow; check before relying on it.
Honest expectations
Snow reliability has become less certain in recent winters. The town has grown fast with a lot of unattractive building. The railway is charming but very slow and its schedule changes. Weekend and New Year crowds are heavy.
Nearby
Borjomi is north; Timotesubani lies between them.
