Abudelauri Lakes

Three small lakes lie in the cirque below the northern side of the Chaukhi massif above the village of Roshka in Khevsureti, and they are known by their colours: the green lake, closest and lowest, reached in about two hours of walking; the blue lake higher up; and the white lake highest of all, fed directly by snowmelt and milky with rock flour, at around two thousand eight hundred metres. The walk up passes a field of huge glacial boulders left by an old moraine. Roshka itself is a small stone village reached on a rough road from the Barisakho valley, and the route over the Chaukhi pass to Juta starts from the same trail.

When to go

July to September; snow lingers late and the road in is impassable outside summer. A day for the green and blue lakes, longer for the white. Start early.

Honest expectations

The road to Roshka is rough and needs four-wheel-drive. The walk to the upper lakes is long with real ascent at altitude. Weather changes quickly and there is no shelter. Guest houses in Roshka are few and basic.
