Verla Mill Village

Verla is a small groundwood pulp and board mill by a river rapids that closed in 1964 and was preserved exactly as it stood, machines, workers' houses and all. A UNESCO site, it is one of the best surviving examples of a rural industrial community from the great age of Nordic forestry, seen on a guided tour.

History

Hugo Neuman founded the first groundwood mill at Verla in 1872, but it was lost to fire in 1876; a larger groundwood and board mill, founded in 1882 by Gottlieb Kreidl and Louis Haenel, ran until 18 July 1964, when the last of the old workers retired. The Kymmene Corporation acquired the mill in 1908, most of the buildings of the village date from 1885-1902, and in 1996 the mill, its power plants and the workers' houses were inscribed on the World Heritage List as testimony to 19th-century forest industry and the lives of its workers (Wikipedia, Verla).

• Guided tours - the story of the community and its industry.

When to go

Summer, when the mill is open for guided tours; it closes outside the warm season, so check before a special trip. A dry day suits the riverside walk.

Before you go

The mill interior is seen only on a guided tour, at set times, so plan around them. It is a specialised industrial-heritage visit, fascinating for the interested but niche for others. It is out in the countryside, a detour needing a car.
