The Sirogojno Open-Air Museum

The Old Village museum at Sirogojno gathers around fifty buildings from the Zlatibor region, moved here and reassembled into two complete homesteads with everything a family needed: the main log house with its open hearth and no chimney, separate sleeping cabins for married sons, a dairy, a bread oven, a drying house for plums, a mill and the outbuildings for animals. Because the arrangement is complete rather than a row of exhibits, it makes sense as a working farm, and staff demonstrate weaving, baking and dairy work in season. The village around it is also known for a knitwear cooperative founded in the 1960s, which turned traditional patterns into designs sold internationally and gave work to local women, and its shop is still here.

When to go

May to October, when the buildings are open, staff are demonstrating crafts and the plateau is green; winter opening is limited and quiet, though snow suits the log houses. Allow a couple of hours, more with a meal at the museum inn.

Honest expectations

It is a reconstruction, with buildings brought from elsewhere, which some visitors mind. Demonstrations depend on the day and season, so out of high summer you may see the buildings without the activity. It is small and takes a morning. Labelling in English is limited, so a guide or the printed booklet helps.
