Linnansaari is a scatter of forested islands and open water in the middle of Lake Saimaa, and it is the classic place to look for the Saimaa ringed seal, one of the rarest seals in the world, found only in this lake. Reached by boat, it is a landscape for paddling, camping and slow watching.

When to go
Summer, when boats run and the seals bask on rocks, is the season; the seals are wild and sightings are never guaranteed. Early morning on calm water gives the best chance.
Honest expectations
Seeing a seal takes luck, patience and usually a guided boat, since they are shy and few - come for the lake, and treat a sighting as a bonus. Access is entirely by boat, so it needs planning. It is a place for slow water travel rather than quick sightseeing.
