Fiji is called the soft coral capital of the world, and Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu is where that claim is settled. Strong tidal currents funnel plankton-rich water through the channel, and soft corals feed on it in extravagant density - fans and trees of pink, violet, orange and yellow covering the walls and bommies. The Great White Wall is the signature site: a sloping wall where soft corals appear pale lavender-white in the blue light, entered through a swim-through tunnel. Dives here run on the tides, and timing is everything.
What you actually see
- The Great White Wall - the pale soft-coral wall reached through a tunnel.
- Purple Wall and Rainbow Passage - dense colour along the channel.
- Current-fed marine life - schooling fish, reef sharks and turtles.
- Taveuni above water - waterfalls, rainforest and the Bouma coast nearby.
When to go
Diving runs year round, with the dry season from May to October offering the best visibility and calmest surface conditions. Water is warm throughout. Dive schedules follow the tides rather than the clock, so mornings and afternoons shift daily - operators plan around slack and drift windows.
Honest expectations
These are current dives, and some sites suit intermediate and experienced divers rather than beginners - operators will match sites to certification honestly if asked. Soft corals show their colour best with a torch, since depth strips warm tones. Getting to the region means a domestic flight from Nadi plus boat transfers, so it is a dedicated trip rather than a day out. Coral bleaching has affected parts of Fiji in warm years; conditions vary site to site.
