Trøllkonufingur, the troll woman's finger, is a blade of rock standing about three hundred and thirteen metres out of the sea off the southern coast of Vágar, seen from the road between Sandavágur and Miðvágur. The name belongs to a story about a giantess who tried to carry the islands off and was caught by the light. It was climbed in 1844 by a Faroese man in front of a visiting Danish king, and rarely since.

What you actually see

  • The rock finger - a blade rising about three hundred metres from the sea.
  • The roadside viewpoint - the vantage between Sandavagur and Midvagur.
  • The 1844 climb - the ascent made in front of a visiting Danish king.
  • The folk tale - the giantess caught by daylight and turned to stone.

When to go

May to September for the road and clear weather. Fog hides the stack frequently. Evening light from the road is the best.

Honest expectations

The view is from the roadside and there is no close approach on foot. Parking is a narrow pull-in on a busy road. Fog closes the view often.

Nearby

Sandavagur is west, and Midvagur is east.
