Sea Lion Island

Sea Lion Island compresses the Falklands' wildlife promise into five walkable miles: southern elephant seals haul their tonnage onto the sandy bays (the breeding beach-master battles run October's theatre), gentoo, magellanic and rockhopper penguins colonise their respective quarters, giant petrels and striated caracaras patrol on bandit schedules, and orcas work the kelp edges close enough to watch from the grass - the island's famous signature. The single lodge puts everything within boot range: no vehicles needed, no fences anywhere, and the wildlife's fearlessness - the archipelago's great gift - at its purest.

History

Sea Lion Island is the southernmost inhabited island of the Falklands, and for most of its history it was a sheep farm: when the British ship Viscount was wrecked here in 1892, its timbers went into the farmhouse. Sheep grazed it for almost all of the 20th century, until all but a small flock were removed in 1997; the Clifton family, who had planted 60,000 stands of tussac grass, sold the island to the Falkland Islands Development Corporation, which built the Sea Lion Lodge for 20 guests, prefabricated and flown in by helicopter, and since then ecotourism has been its only business, with scientists using the lodge since 1996. The island became a Ramsar site on 24 September 2001 and a National Nature Reserve in 2017, and in March 2024 a wildfire started by lightning burned on it for more than a week (Wikipedia, Sea Lion Island).
