Babille Elephant Sanctuary

Babille was declared in 1970 to protect a population of African elephant that lives here in dry acacia and commiphora woodland along the Erer, Gobele and Daketa valleys, isolated from other populations and at the northeastern edge of the species' range in Africa; the animals are sometimes referred to as a distinct eastern subspecies, though that classification is debated. Numbers are small, in the low hundreds at best, and the sanctuary has been under severe pressure from farming, settlement and charcoal burning inside its boundaries, with much of the area converted. Seeing elephants requires a scout, time and luck, usually in the river valleys. The area also holds lesser kudu, warthog, baboons and a good dryland bird list. Nearby is the Valley of Marvels.

When to go

October to March for the tracks. Elephants concentrate near water in the dry season, which improves the odds. Heat is severe by midday at any time of year.

Before you go

Encroachment into the sanctuary is extensive and visible; large parts are now farmed. Elephant sightings are far from guaranteed and may need a full day. Tracks are rough and a four-wheel drive with a scout is necessary. There is no accommodation inside.
