Mbuluzi Game Reserve

Mbuluzi sits between the Mbuluzi and Mlawula rivers at the foot of the Lubombo range, a privately run reserve with giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and several antelope species and no dangerous game, which means visitors can walk and cycle the whole property unaccompanied. Self-catering houses and camps are spread through the bush. The river frontage and the riverine forest along it are the best part of the reserve. The two rivers meet at the southern end of the property, which is where most of the game concentrates in the dry months.

What you actually see

• The walking access - no dangerous game, so the reserve can be covered on foot.
• The giraffe and zebra - the larger animals across the open ground.
• The riverine forest - the tree cover along the Mbuluzi and Mlawula.
• The Lubombo backdrop - the range rising along the eastern edge.

When to go

May to September is dry and cooler. Summer is hot and humid in the lowveld. Rivers run strongest after summer rain.

Honest expectations

Accommodation is self-catering and supplies must be brought in. There are no predators, which some visitors find flat. Roads inside are rough after rain.
